April 17st, 2025
The three labels were designed by Spazio di Paolo. During Vinitaly, visitors will also be able to taste new products from the Abruzzo-based cooperative group
Cantina Tollo, the historic cooperative group from Abruzzo, won three Vinitaly Design Awards: the restyling of Mo’ Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva DOP received the gold medal in the Red Wines category; the newly-designed label of Peco Pecorino Terre d’Abruzzo IGT got he silver medal among the White Wines; and the new Hedòs Rosé Terre d’Abruzzo IGT reached the third place in the Rosé Wines category. Now in its 29 th edition, the Vinitaly Design Award celebrates the best label design for wines, spirits, liqueurs, beers, and extra virgin olive oil, aiming to encourage companies and designers to continuously improve their image.
Cantina Tollo’s labels were designed by Spazio di Paolo, a world-renowned studio specialising in wine and spirits packaging design. The studio also created the visual identity of the new Hedòs Bianco Terre d’Abruzzo IGP and Passerina Terre d’Abruzzo IGP, as well as the restyling of Maiolica Terre di Chieti IGP. In addition to the award-winning labels, visitors to Cantina Tollo’s stand at Vinitaly will also have the chance to taste new wines.
“We are extremely proud that the labels created by Spazio di Paolo for our brand received such prestigious recognition. The award-winning wines, together with our new releases, perfectly represent our company’s production philosophy,” says Sandro Ciavattella, General Manager of Cantina Tollo. “We want to give a new direction and think about a repositioning of the brand, which has always been attentive to market trends while maintaining our identity and the values in which we believe. The wines showcased at Vinitaly respond to new trends and, at the same time, tell about the authenticity and territory to the modern consumer. The label design follows this direction: the new images are elegant, refined and ethereal, illustrating the universe of Cantina Tollo with grace and lightness.”
The Vinitaly Design Award-Winning Wines
Mo’ in the Abruzzese dialect means “now” or “right away.” True to its name, Mo’ Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva DOP expresses its full potential right from the start: a wine ready to be enjoyed immediately with an intense and persistent sip, while also capable of evolving over time. A classic that continues to succeed year after year with its fruity aromas of black cherry, wild berries, and complex spicy notes. Peco Pecorino Terre di Chieti IGP is the result of the meeting between an ancient grape variety and Cantina Tollo’s mature oenological expertise. The wine, developed through years of research, is versatile in food pairings and offers elegant floral notes combined with the scent of sage. Hedòs Rosé Terre d’Abruzzo IGP is made from Montepulciano grapes. On the nose, it expresses aromas of orange peel, white peach, a hint of grapefruit and elderflower notes. On the palate, fresh acidity blends harmoniously with fruity flavors and a medium body, leading to a long, saline finish. Hedòs Rosé is the perfect match for refined aperitifs, seafood or vegetable starters, fresh salads, and white meats. It also pairs beautifully with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine.
The New Wines at Vinitaly
Hedòs Bianco Terre d’Abruzzo IGP is a blend of Pecorino and Cococciola grapes, two varieties that thrive in Abruzzo. Pale and luminous yellow in color, on the nose it reveals complex aromas of lemon and grapefruit, with hints of white peach, boxwood, and elderflower. The palate is balanced with a fruity intensity, moderate alcohol, and fresh, saline acidity, ending with a long, persistent finish. It pairs perfectly with light Mediterranean starters, fish stews, fresh salads, and white meats. Passerina Terre d’Abruzzo IGP, made exclusively from Passerina grapes, has a brilliant golden color. In the glass, it offers aromas of citrus, white peach, and elderflower, accompanied by soft notes of almond and chamomile. On the palate, it’s well-balanced with fruitiness, marked acidity, and moderate alcohol level, with a pleasantly phenolic, almondy finish.

A series of events scheduled in Europe, Asia and America will introduce Pecorino grape variety and its expressions to the international public
Cantina Tollo Group is glad to introduce 10 Shades of Pecorino, a project aimed at spreading the knowledge on Pecorino - a grape variety grown in Abruzzo - to an international audience.
Throughout the year several stops are scheduled worldwide: the USA, Canada, Japan, Vietnam, the UK, the Czech Republic, Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Poland. The tastings will highlight the potential of Pecorino and its best expressions, from sparkling and organic still at spontaneous fermentation, to the heroic viticulture at 800 metres a.s.l. and amphora ageing for a total of ten different expressions. The company was one of the first to give value to the grape and experiment with different vinification methods.
“We are among the first producers to have believed in the potential of this variety – explains Sandro Ciavattella, general manager of Cantina Tollo – and with 10 Shades of Pecorino we are pleased to introduce to the international markets its several interpretations, suitable for all the consumers who look for long-lived, fresh and versatile white wines”.
The Pecorino-based wines from Cantina Tollo have shown a significant growth in international markets: in the last two years, there has been a 26% increase in sales volumes. 20% of the Pecorino sold is organic: “It is a unique product – continues Ciavattella – meeting the international demand for wines from local and indigenous white grapes”.
10 Shades of Pecorino started in Milan, the first Italian stop and it is set to end in Rome, after the events abroad.

The new label will make its debut at ProWein and Vinitaly. It is inspired by the tiles of the church of San Donato di Castelli, defined as the "Sistine Chapel of Majolica"
Cantina Tollo, a company that has been one of the main ambassadors of the flavors of Abruzzo for more than sixty years, will launch Maiolica Igp Terre di Chieti, a red wine made from grapes of this indigenous variety rediscovered thanks to the work of their group. The new reference will make its debut first at ProWein, scheduled in Düsseldorf from 19 to 21 March, and then at Vinitaly, in Verona from 2 to 5 April.
Majolica is a grape variety once cultivated in Abruzzo and later abandoned. Historical traces of its cultivation are witnessed already in 1875. The recovery of the variety was made possible thanks to the work of Cantina Tollo and the germ bank of the Istituto Sperimentale di Viticoltura di Conegliano Veneto (Treviso). The cooperative was one of the first companies to receive the vine shoots, planted in 2019, and to market bottles of Maiolica Igp Terre di Chieti from the 2021 vintage. The small experimental vineyard is located in the municipality of Tollo, but cultivation has also begun in hilly environments, with a greater temperature range, to test and assess the suitable habitat for the vine. “We have always been proud ambassadors of Abruzzo in the world,” explains Luciano Gagliardi, President of Cantina Tollo. “The rediscovery of the majolica vine is the revival of a piece of our collective history, which coincides with that of the place that gives the winery its name. Once again, therefore, we are bringing back the roots of an extraordinary territory like that of Tollo”.
The image depicted on the label reproduces the tile specially made by ceramicist Lorenzo Di Stefano, who was inspired by the 17th-century decorations of the country church of San Donato di Castelli (Teramo). The tile chosen for Cantina Tollo's new label is precisely one of these beautiful women with an austere profile and rich clothing standing out against a deep blue background. Maiolica Igp Terre di Chieti is a soft ruby-colored wine with hints of macerated wild strawberry and raspberry. On the palate, it is elegant, and medium-bodied, with silky, balanced tannins and a lively acidity that leads to a long, deep finish.
Maiolica IGT Terre di Chieti will be on sale in Cantina Tollo's eshop from April, at 13 euro.
